Oak Porch Kits & Canopies

Price range: £670.00 through £1,190.00

Our oak porch kits and canopies are handmade to order in our Lincolnshire workshop, cut from solid English and French oak using traditional mortise and tenon joinery. Choose a ready to assemble kit you can fit yourself, or have your porch supplied and fitted by our team. Every design is made to measure, built to order and delivered across the UK, with prices starting at £670.

Solid oak porch kits, made the traditional way

A porch is the first thing visitors see, and solid oak makes an entrance that softwood and GRP cannot match. We work exclusively with Quercus robur, milled, air dried and kiln dried at our own workshop in Grantham, so every frame leaves us ready to stand for decades.

Prices run from £670 for our bespoke green oak porch canopy to £12,000 for a fully enclosed hardwood porch complete with frame, glass and door. Most customers spend between £950 and £2,500 on designs such as the double size solid oak canopy porch kit, the Green Oak Porch Kit and the Manor Oak Porch. Unlike many suppliers, we publish every price.

Self assembly or supplied and fitted

Every kit arrives pre-cut and jointed, ready to bolt together, so a confident DIYer can fit one over a weekend. If you’d rather leave it to us, fitting is available at extra cost. Either way you get the same handmade frame from the same workshop.

Many porches fall within permitted development, so you may not need planning permission, though it is always worth checking with your local authority first. Every porch and canopy is built around your opening size and the style of your home. Send us a photo and a rough opening size and we will come back with a quick price.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need planning permission for a porch?

Usually not. Porches fall under permitted development, so as long as the footprint stays under three square metres, no part rises above three metres, and it sits more than two metres from any boundary facing a road, planning permission is not normally needed. Most of our oak porch kits fall comfortably within those limits. Listed buildings and conservation areas are the exception, so check with your local planning authority before ordering.

How much does an oak porch cost?

Our oak porches run from £670 for a bespoke green oak porch canopy to £12,000 for a fully enclosed hardwood porch complete with frame, glass and door. Most customers spend between £950 and £2,500 on kits such as the Double Size Solid Oak Canopy Porch Kit at £950 or the Green Oak Porch Kit at £2,150. Every price is published on the product page, and made to measure sizes can be quoted quickly.

Are your porches supplied as a kit or fitted?

Both. Every kit arrives pre-cut and jointed in our Grantham workshop using traditional mortise and tenon joinery, so the frame bolts together on site rather than being cut from scratch. A confident DIYer can fit a canopy over a weekend. If you would rather not tackle it yourself, we can arrange fitting at extra cost.

What is green oak?

Green oak is freshly sawn oak that still holds its natural moisture, which makes it easier to work and more affordable than kiln dried timber. As it seasons in place it slowly dries, tightens and weathers to a soft silver grey. We mill, air dry and kiln dry English and French oak at our own workshop, so we can advise whether green or seasoned oak suits your porch best.

What is the best wood for a front porch?

Solid oak. It is naturally strong, rich in tannins that resist rot, and it will outlast softwood many times over, which is why we work exclusively with oak from the forests of England and France. Softwood porches need regular treatment, and GRP canopies never sit quite right against brick and stone. An oak frame simply weathers and gains character with age.

Does a porch add value to a house?

A well built porch adds kerb appeal, shelter for the front door and a warmer entrance, and first impressions count when a home goes on the market. An oak porch in particular signals quality from the street. The exact value added depends on the property, but a handmade oak entrance is one of the more affordable ways to lift the whole front of a house.

How long does an oak porch last?

Decades. Oak has been used for timber framing in Britain for centuries, and a properly jointed oak frame will typically outlast its owners time in the house. It needs very little looking after: left alone the oak silvers naturally, or it can be oiled to keep its golden colour. We have been building oak joinery in Lincolnshire since 2013 and build every frame to last.

How big can a porch be without planning permission?

As a rule, up to three square metres of ground area measured externally, with nothing higher than three metres and the whole porch at least two metres from any boundary that faces a road. Stay inside those limits and a porch is normally permitted development. Our made to measure kits can be sized to keep you within the rules, and we are happy to advise before you order.

Can I put a canopy over just my front door?

Yes, in most cases. A wall mounted oak canopy fixes above the door straight to the wall, needs no posts or groundwork for smaller spans, and usually avoids planning permission because nothing is enclosed. It is the quickest way to add shelter and character to an entrance. Send us a photo of your frontage and a rough opening size and we will confirm what suits.

Do you deliver oak porch kits across the UK?

Yes. Every kit is made to order in Grantham and delivered nationwide. Because the frame is pre-cut and jointed, it arrives ready to assemble on site. Fitting by our own team is available for homes within reach of Lincolnshire, and we will always confirm delivery costs and timescales before you order.

Will the oak crack or change colour over time?

Some movement and fine surface cracks, known as shakes, are completely normal in oak and do not affect the strength of the frame. Left untreated the timber weathers from honey gold to a silver grey over a year or two. If you prefer to keep the golden tone, an annual coat of oak oil will hold the colour. Either way the frame stays sound.

How do I get a made to measure porch quote?

Send us a photo of your doorway along with the rough width, height and projection you have in mind, and we will come back with a price and the options that fit. We can adjust any of our standard designs or draw something bespoke. Call 0147 660 7307 or email info@bk-joinery.co.uk and we will talk it through.
